“We like trading in Sandwell because our family has lived and worked here for generations. The people are genuine, down-to-earth folk who value loyalty and good service – that’s what keeps us here.”
Established: 1960
Activities:
Bayliss Garages Ltd is a fourth-generation, family-run business that has been proudly serving Smethwick and the wider Sandwell community for over 60 years. Founded on 28 November 1960 by Charles Henry Bayliss, the company grew out of the family’s earlier coal and haulage firm, C.H. Bayliss & Sons, which began in the 1930s.
The garage was originally purchased from the Thurstan family, who had operated a motor business on the site since 1913. When the government introduced MOTs in 1960, Bayliss Garages became one of the first in the area to offer MOT testing for cars and motorcycles a service it continues to provide today alongside repairs, diagnostics and vehicle maintenance.
Three things to know about Bayliss Garages:
- The business has remained in the same family for four generations, with each bringing new skills and innovations while keeping the same traditional values of honesty, reliability and service.
- The building itself has local heritage: the steel structure behind the brick frontage was built in 1927 by Elwell Buildings of Oldbury a connection that links Bayliss Garages to another proud Sandwell maker.
- Bayliss Garages is a strong community supporter, sponsoring local events such as Warley Woods Party in the Park and “Santa in the Woods,” this year, they are also offering a full car service as a raffle prize for the Christmas event.
Fun fact:
In 1960, when Charles Henry Bayliss purchased the garage, a photo was taken of him and his family with a rare Lotus 7 Series 1 Climax outside the workshop. To mark the garage’s 65th anniversary, the family recently recreated the same photograph with another Lotus 7 Climax celebrating both the business’s legacy and its enduring family spirit.
