Bailey’s journey to employment with UK Access Solutions

Case studies Inner

Bailey, a young neurodivergent job seeker, was referred to Sandwell’s Specialist Employment Team by Sandwell College, where he had completed a Supported Internship at Sandwell Valley and gained a Level 1 qualification in Construction.

Like many young people, Bailey was keen to build a career in construction but found traditional recruitment processes difficult to navigate. The Specialist Employment programme provided the tailored support he needed to take his first steps into work.

Building experience and confidence

To help Bailey explore opportunities, the team arranged a site visit with Vinci Building at the Edward Street Hospital refurbishment. Inspired by what he saw, Bailey enrolled on a course to gain his CSCS Card, an essential requirement for construction roles.

While working towards his qualification, Bailey undertook a four-week placement with Premium Powder Coating (PPC). He quickly impressed them with his work ethic, reliability and willingness to learn. By the end of the placement, Bailey was working full-time hours and had grown significantly in confidence. Although there were no paid vacancies at PPC, the experience helped him to develop valuable skills and boost his CV.

After gaining his CSCS Card, Bailey returned to Vinci for a work placement on site, where he once again demonstrated his hard-working attitude and teamwork. Each experience brought him closer to his goal of paid employment.

Securing paid employment

When an opportunity arose with UK Access Solutions, the team introduced Bailey to Managing Director Ashley Rookes. Instead of a formal interview, Bailey was invited for a site visit and informal chat, followed by a two-day work trial.

This flexible approach took the pressure out of recruitment and allowed Bailey to demonstrate his skills in a real work setting. It worked. At the end of the trial, Bailey was offered full-time paid employment in the yard at UK Access Solutions. To support him in his transition, UK Access also put a buddy system in place, ensuring Bailey always has someone to turn to with questions.

For Bailey, this opportunity has been life-changing. Not only has he secured stable work, but there is also potential for him to progress onto a scaffolding apprenticeship in the future.

Voices of Success

“I like everything about my job. I felt proud of myself when I was offered the job. Sam Crabtree and Seema Mair were excellent at helping me with my CV and looking for a job. They boosted my confidence.”
Bailey Harker

Ashley Rookes, Managing Director of UK Access Solutions said “Bailey’s doing a great job here at UK Access Solutions and we’re pleased to count him as a valued member of our team – well done Bailey!”

By adapting recruitment methods and making small but meaningful adjustments, UK Access Solutions have gained a loyal and hardworking team member. For Bailey, paid employment has not only provided financial independence but also boosted his confidence, sense of purpose and future career prospects.
