The manufacturing powerhouse we now know and love as Sandwell was formed in 1974.
It’s a metropolitan borough bordering the city of Birmingham, the Black Country boroughs of Dudley and Walsall, and the city of Wolverhampton. Sandwell has six main towns: Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. Another popular manufacturing location in Sandwell is Cradley Heath.
Sandwell’s world-famous football club is West Bromwich Albion, whose home ground is The Hawthorns. The team’s nickname is the Baggies.
Sandwell’s central location at the beating heart of the industrial West Midlands is significant both to our history and future. The region’s economy grew from its rich coal and ironstone reserves, flourishing in the eighteenth century onwards with the Industrial Revolution and the arrival of canals.
Today we have a world-class, world-serving supply chain, making products and components used in aerospace, construction, engineering, healthcare and every industry in between.
Our modern-day industries benefit from a pro-business council. Sandwell Council knows the benefit of thriving businesses, for jobs, skills, raising aspirations and building wealth in our communities. Our Business Growth Team is committed to helping you prosper.
We also benefit from excellent transport links. Sandwell is only fifteen miles from Birmingham International Airport. And thanks to Sandwell’s location at the heart of the UK motorway network, an amazing 90 per cent of the population of England and Wales is less than two hours’ drive away.
